The tension of touring built up further for Twickenham rockers Narration last night as an evening at
Camden’s Barfly descended into a mass brawl – with The Fly’s Mischa Pearlman caught right in the midst of the flying fists. The four piece, who have been receiving high praise for their epic, melodic qualities, aren’t accepted with such open arms by more scenester indie types. “See you on Top Of The Pops,” sniped one man in the Barfly audience as Narration brought their set to a close. Which was a fairly bizarre comment, considering that the show was scrapped in 2006. The band laughed it off before being confronted by a more physical antagonism downstairs. Punches followed and people from all corners of the venue quickly joined in. By the time the fight was helped to a close by Peacemaker Pearlman, who used his tall frame to pull people apart, it was impossible to identify who was on whose side. One man was adamant that he’d come in from the street, “To help out.”
Either way, it’s safe to say that there is still a running battle between different kinds of music. The genre barriers may appear to be becoming more ambiguous, but to those in the thick of it all, what people listen to will always define them, and these types can still spot their opposite a million miles off. Just as the rockers fought the mods, and the metallers fought the indie kids, still the battles go on. We wouldn’t have it any other way…
