There must come a time every once in a while, probably coinciding with his tri-annual bath, when Pete Doherty asks himself a few searching questions.

I wonder, he thinks, as the water slowly turns the colour of Director’s bitter, have I gone too far with this whole wizened charmer/decrepit poet thing?

I mean, obviously – he’s full-on pondering now, hat tilted back – being dissolute is tres cool, and being a shambolic, unreliable, perennially scandalous chain-smoker with teeth the colour of pub bog porcelain has served me really well so far. As looks/vibes go, I’ve really nailed it.

But the question is, should now be the time for change?

He pauses to scoop a loamy film from the waterline with a yellowing, bamboo stick of a finger, and dab out his fag on the tap.
