The Great Escape Blog: 6

17 May 2008

Yesterday myself, Niall and Harriet barely had time to roll out of bed and scratch our nads/tits before we were all wrapped up in Great Escape mania again.

First we went to meet Johnny Foreigner again, this time to do some FLY TV interviews, which, randomly, started in front of a big tank parked on the seafront.

Then we traipsed up to Audio to interview Sam from Late of the Pier, a lovely fella… He looked in pretty good nick considering their gig on Thursday night was a late one and he admitted to having been up for 48 hours a day previously.

With our work done in front of the camera, we nip off for a spot of lunch and return to Audio in time to see We Are Scientists ace BBQ set (read Harriet’s blog for more on that).

Then we get shut in a really hot cupboard with Keith and Chris while they do some video spots for the stage sponsor. That was weird.

We then head downstairs at the venue to see Cage The Elephant bludgeon everyone with their Red Hot Chili Peppers/Rage Against The Machine/Led Zeppelin dumb-ass rock-brilliance. Unfortunately, halfway through ‘Ain’t No Rest For The Wicked’ me, Harriet and Niall have a crisis conference and realise that two of us should be watching White Lies at Concorde 2. Me and Hat run down to the pier, leap onto a waiting MTV scooter (randomly, there is an army of Vespas and riders giving people lifts along the seafront to the venue, which is about half a mile from the pier) and get there in time to see White Lies kick off with some monstrously dark, tuneful Interpol-meets-The-Cure-meets-The-Killers monstrousness. They will be huge.

Then we rush back in an attempt to catch the rest of Dead Kids at Audio, and we’re FUCKING glad we do… I can’t bring myself to write about how AMAZING it was… so you’d better just read what Niall’s written about it. Suffice to say that any gig where the singer ends up walking on the ceiling is incredible.

Next are Late of the Pier, who just crush any hope that the rest of the evening might be in any way relaxing with their 80s dance boshery. Incredible. At one point during ‘Bathroom Gurgle’ I am actually upside down which, considering I’m 13 stone and 6′, says plenty about the bloke who managed to pick me up.

Then we end up boozing with Keith from We Are Scientists back at the hotel and talking rubbish. 4am bedtime. What a night!
