Look Through The Gleehole

04 May 2011

Welcome into Idiot Glee’s studio.

Sorry for the mess. This laptop is what I do everything on…it’s actually hooked up to the monitor on the right because I dropped the laptop last year and the screen went out.  I need a new one…you can also see The Butchers CDs on my printer. The Butchers are another Lexington band I’m really close with. The lead man, Jon Frederikson, is a such an inspiration.

Also you can see my main keyboard – the Yamaha Portasound VSS-30.  It’s a sampling keyboard like the SK 1 but much better…love it to death. Eric from Caboladies moved from Lexington a couple of years ago and sold it to me for $40. Didn’t realize at the time how much use it would get. Need the two top keys!

I recorded my entire album and everything else I do through this mixer and this MXL Condenser mic. Bought the mic off of Musician’s Friend for $60 a while ago. It’s really all you need…so simple and clear. The mixer is a Yamaha. Pretty good one. Inherited it from my dad a while ago. To the right is a tape deck I bought at Office Max 6 or 7 years ago. It’s amazing. Only $20. Put this thing in a room and record a live band and somehow it always turns out fantastic. Of course it is a lo-fi recording…but you know. Portable. I recorded a few piano parts on the album with it then transferred the tracks to the laptop.

This Yamaha acoustic guitar has been in the family for years now.  My dad bought it in the 80s. It’s nothing special, but gets the job done.
The bass is hilariously ugly and cheap. I think it’s just one step up from a Wal Mart guitar. I actually recorded most bass parts on the album with it. It’s only had 3 strings for as long as I can remember…no big deal. Just use another string.

My dad picked up this Ludwig drum set from a country musician friend years ago. Pretty sure it’s a 70s model…I love the way it sounds. Kind of crappy, kind of amazing. There are more pieces to it then this…usually when recording the snare, I layer clothes or something over it. I remember when recording ‘Don’t Go Out Tonight’, I used a box cutter as a drumstrick and played through some pajama pants.

THE END.
