Not to be mistaken with Girl, Def Leppard guitarist Phil Collen’s former outfit, San Francisco’s Girls invest the sound of Redd Kross covering The Carpenters with a late night sense of immortality. The band’s moniker may rouse glam connotations, but, “if anyone’s expecting Motley Crue,” laughs singer/guitarist Christopher Owens, “well, they’ll get a motley crew but nobody spinning around in a cage, doing a drum solo!” Instead, prepare for distorting sketches of reality. “I went out with my ex-girlfriend,” says Owens, explaining the addictive ‘Lust For Life’, “and I literally doodled out the lyrics whilst she talked about her dad, her new boyfriend, going to the beach. I was thinking ‘I wish I had that in my life!’” Happily, Girls – like an upbeat Spiritualized – are never found wanting on a musical level.
