MUSIC GO MUSIC
Words: Mischa Pearlman
I ventured into Hollywood for the first time in years the other day,” says Music Go Music singer Gala Bell, “and I was shocked that it’s the same city that I call home. It’s a completely different world. Where we live I would say it’s more like Mexico than what most people would think of as Hollywood or LA. It’s predominantly Hispanic. We have chickens and it’s a lot more rural.” Far removed from the fake plastic world of Hollywood, Bell and herbandmates reside in North LA, where they craft the stardust sounds of their summer-pop groove, harking back to pre-synth era of Abba and Blondie. Gala Bell isn’t her real name, by the way. She and her two bandmates, Kamer Maza and TORG, were playing in other bands long before Music Go Music started, and chose to use pseudonyms for this project. Their real identities have yet to be revealed. “It’s easier for our brains that way,” explains Bell, “because when we make this music we use a completely different part of our brains. It just feels like that’s who I am when I’m with Music Go Music. If you can partition out different parts of your brain I think it really frees you up to do lots of different things.” You could argue that having alter-egos is actually somewhat in line with that strange and surreal world of Hollywood, but you’d be wrong. Their names may be made up, but the music they make is genuine and pure. You can tell Bell’s reaction to the buzz that’s building up around the band. “There’s a possibility that a lot of people are going to hear these songs. And I’ve never really made music that it seemed a lot of different people would like, so the fact it seems a lot of people are liking what we’re doing is exciting.” It’d be a world away from their chickens, but there’s a very good chance these guys are going to do very well indeed. But it’s unlikely that success would change them. “I’m seriously looking into getting a goat,” says Bell. “Because you can milk it and you can make cheese, and actually goat’s milk is a lot better for you than cow’s milk.” She laughs. “That’s the whole reason we’re doing this. Every
time I get stressed out and it becomes overwhelming, I just think about having a couple of baby goats and everything’s fine!”
‘Warm In The Shadows’ is released on Secretly Canadian on July 27th.
