CYMBALS EAT GUITARS
Words: Iain Moffat
The last time any guitar-eating happened in music – Blondie’s ‘Rapture’, wethinks – none of this startling Staten Island foursome was even born. But, youth notwithstanding, they’ve produced a debut album, ‘Why Are There Mountains’ that approaches touchstones from the fourth Pavement and Mercury Rev offerings. “I thought about nothing but this record for three years, at the expense of my relationships, academics and general well-being,” admits frontman Joseph Ferocious, “but I’d never really been able to commit to anything meaningful up until that point”. Intense stuff, then, but not off-puttingly so, since, as Joseph rightly has it, “I think we’ve struck a balance between direct, immediate appeal and artistic density”. He’s not wrong: Cymbals Eat Guitars could have most of their peers for breakfast…
‘Why There Are Mountains’ is released on Memphis on October 26th.
