THE GREATEST ESCAPE PART 2
It looks as though The Fly’s top journo Wayne Capri never made it to Brighton for The Great Escape after all, in fact no one has seen him since he boarded the Mega Bus from London on Wednesday evening. If anyone does see him, just keep walking, he’s a right tool…
Anyway the Great Escape lived up to its name, it was Great… the best band for us? The Pistolas win hands down, they were bang on, great tunes, amazing front man (called Simon) and there can be no doubt that given the right breaks and opportunities their feet won’t touch the ground for the next 2 years… good luck chaps.
Beyond that, as previously suggested, Airborne Toxic Event were knock out, with their LA art-pop, placing them firmly in the Killers, Arcade Fire, Franz camp with more than enough of their own ‘angular view’ on life to ensure the need for such comparison is short lived. Their current limited single “Does this mean you’re moving On?” is a sure-fire future hit. Buy 2 copies. The Enemy were top-notch as were Patrick Watson, Laylow had industry tongues a-wagging, The Kaiser’s manager couldn’t get enough of Danish quintet The Kissaway Trail, whilst Oh No Ono had everyone completely foxed in a rather good way.
We saw The Gossip sound-checking on a roundabout even though we didn’t know they were playing, spotted The Maccabees in ‘Harry Ramsdens’ chippy on the seafront and hear that a certain person from a very famous band from the North West allegedly punched a camera man for “taking the piss”, fair enough I guess, they usually do.
We reckon TGE was a big success and is sure to stay on the Festival map for some years to come, it was ridiculously good value for money and about as well organised as is possible (particularly liked the text service)…
Nice
