Coldplay Return

17 Jun 2008

Coldplay kicked off their ‘Viva La Vida’ live campaign last night, playing a free show to competition winners at
London’s

Brixton
Academy
. The show was broadcast on Radio 1, as the band showcased their new material amongst a handful of Coldplay classics.

Opening with the instrumental album intro ‘Life in Technicolor’, the band launched into new single ‘Violet Hill’. The rest of the set featured an acoustic version of ‘Yellow’ from the venue’s balcony, and a surprising solo vocal debut for drummer Will Champion, taking lead on the song ‘Death Will Never Conquer’. Martin also toyed with the recent controversy surrounding the new album’s plagiarism, telling the crowd that the intro to ‘God Put A Smile On Your Face’ sounded a bit too much like Radiohead’s ‘2 + 2 = 5’. He quickly changed his tone though, telling the crowd he was only kidding, and that “you should never joke about plagiarism when you’re live on Radio 1!”

Last night’s set list was:
