Howling Bells // In The Courtyard

23 Apr 2009

The wonderful Howling Bells entered FlyTV’s In The Courtyard stage this week.

We don’t do riders here at The Fly, but occasionally we get requests with our In The Courtyard guests, normally for a spare guitar or tambourine, a cup of tea or maybe some water. However, when Howling Bells came into see us this week, the band’s guitarist Joel asked for 2 megaphones and whisky, about 2 minutes before they started to perform. A quick email was sent around the building, (“Does anyone have a spare megaphone?” is an email we never thought we’d write) and miraculously, and rather surreally, we seemed to have an abundance of the fellas lying around. Thankfully our editor Niall has had a bottle of whisky on his desk for about 2 years that we’ve only seen him drink once (May deadline was pretty tough) so that went straight to the cause. Howling Bells could have asked for a glove compartment, yellow staple gun or a glass of freshly crushed black grape juice for all we cared; their two acoustic renditions of ‘Treasure Hunt’ and ‘Digital Hearts’ were totally captivating and rank purdy damn highly in our Amazing FlyTV Performances chart now. That doesn’t exist yet officially, cos we’re not that big-headed.

Check out some more of our Courtyard performances by scrolling down our nicely alphabetised list of groups for the likes of Silversun Pickups, Doves, Black Lips, Hockey, Peter, Bjorn And John, Esser, Dan Black and lots more…
