Atlas Sound

‘Parallax’ (4AD)

Bradford Cox is nothing if not prolific. Since 2005, he’s released a total of eight ‘official’ albums with Deerhunter and solo project Atlas Sound, alongside a smorgasbord of online demo collections. Quality control fans needn’t worry, however: the typically-tense ‘Parallax’ offers further evidence that his hyperactive muse is fully engaged. Opener ‘The Shakes’ picks up where Deerhunter’s ‘Microcastle’ left off, before arpeggiated spook-out ‘Te Amo’ pushes Cox’s voice away from its usual hushed tone. Effortless hooks add flavour to ‘Mona Lisa’ and ‘My Angel Is Broken’, but this recipe is too deliciously obtuse to focus on the sweet stuff alone.
