Battles have never been the types to toe the line, but in ‘Gloss Drop’ they’ve produced something so wildly, wonderfully strange that it defies classification altogether. The beauty, however, is that though each track – from the tropical Nintendo pop of single ‘Ice Cream’ to highlight ‘My Machines’ (feat. Gary Numan) with its almost Prodigy-esque pulse – beats to its own incredibly individual drum; there’s no sense of being wilfully obtuse or alienating. Each track is joyous, upbeat and pop-tinged. ‘Gloss Drop’ is filled with the kind of extraordinary eclecticism that marks Battles out as jacks of all trades and masters of them too.
