Back after three years, Canadian loon Chad VanGaalen is never gonna be one of indie’s A-listers. His music is just too damn weird to sell by the bucketload. ‘Diaper Island’ takes West Coast psych as its starting point before fucking things up with a smorgasbord of post-punk sounds, ‘Do Not Fear’ sounds like Panda Bear ditching the electronics, while several tracks echo Sonic Youth’s recent fondness for off-kilter jangle-rock. Perversely, ‘Sara’ is one of the prettiest indiefolk ballads this side of The Shins. Marks off for ‘Shave My Pussy’’s jarring title, but otherwise this’ll be loved intensely by a blessed few.
