If silicone bra implants, membership to Weight Watchers, or 2 for 1 vouchers at your local Strada are as romantic as you get, then sonny, you are in luck: ‘Within And Without’ might be just your ticket out of Emotional Retardsville. The amount of heart crippling emotions and lush sounds packed into Washed Out’s first album proper are enough sonic arson to cement him as a truly compelling electronic artist, abolishing the of-the-moment blog frenzy that has surrounded him prior to this release. Produced by Ben Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter), Ernest Greene’s LP echoes the stirring expansiveness of Boards Of Canada (‘Eyes Be Closed’) and the kaleidoscopic pulsations heard in Caribou’s last offering. If the buoyant skip of ‘Soft’ isn’t your cup of Lenor then ‘Far Away’ should make the sturdiest of chins tremble, and, at points, the album gets so blissed-out and buoyant that it goes, dare we say it, a bit Moby. If you can get past that comparison, ‘Within And Without’ is a remarkable album. What’s more impressive is that we survived an entire Washed Out review without mentioning chillwave. (That doesn’t count).
