‘Old Volcanoes’ (Marshall Teller)

Rory Attwell is a lot like the Phil Spector of east London, minus the corpse in his drive and prison sentence, obviously. His production skills have helped bands like Male Bonding pretend they’re American with 100% convincing results, and every lo-fi outfit worth their plaid jacket has worked with him. As it happens, his solo debut is better than your average knobsman-plays guitar effort. Where Attwell’s previous works (Test-Icicles, KASMS) have charged with rancorous purpose, ‘Old Volcanoes’ prefers a dirgier, more amiable approach that, at its best, inherits the spirit of early Blur (‘Let Down’).
