‘The Rhumb Line’

(V2)

A melancholy but never morose sentiment running through it’s veins, ‘The Rhumb Line’ embodies Ra Ra Riot’s grief for original drummer John Pike, who tragically drowned last summer. Often it recalls Arcade Fire at their most heavy-hearted, like on the sombre, string-laden ‘Ghost Under Rocks’, yet at points the New York six-piece fit cosily as melodious roommates with Vampire Weekend. A raw, honest documentation of loss, their debut takes the listener from the emptiness of grief through to the resulting celebration of life, with ‘Oh, La’’s resounding, triumphant message that “we’ve got to stick together” ringing in the ear long after it’s finished. A stunning album and a beautiful memorial.
