Wolfmother
‘Cosmic Egg’
(Island)
Let’s get one thing out of the way: this fucking rocks. But we knew it would, right? It’s Wolfmother, for christ’s sake. ‘Sundial’ whacks out Ozzy’s wastrel vocal from the mighty Sabs track ‘NIB’ to a frenzied background to whip things up; but then there’s the Stones-y psych-indie of ‘In The Morning’ or the silly, drippy ‘Far Away’ to wimp things down in a dribbly haze. And whilst Andrew Stockdale is the only original member left, something like ‘10,000 Feet’ is such a splendid Zep derivative it hardly matters who’s hammering the strings; a point proven by the dirt-glammy Black Crowes lipcurl of the title track which has a riff plucked from Bolan’s darkest, dingiest rock-beast dreams. Where he fucking rocks, properly and forever.
