‘Crazy For You’

We’re not saying Best Coast, aka Bethany Cosentino, should suddenly develop a penchant for intricate math-core and write in inverted metaphors but there definitely comes a point during ‘Crazy For You’s twelve song offering that her 1+1=2 school of lyric-writing starts to grate somewhat. Her debut thrives in it’s darker moments (the ominous drone of ‘Honey’ or the riff-driven ‘Goodbye’) and, individually, the likes of ‘Our Deal’ and ‘The End’ are sweetly simplistic love songs, drenched in woozy feedback and West Coast harmony; en masse, however, even the plethora of fuzzy, sun-drenched melodics can’t entirely dispel the feeling of listening to a really dreamy playground rhyme. With a little more lyrical substance, Best Coast could have something truly stunning.
