It opens with an ominous crescendo of atonal, swirling organ and eerie guitars. Suddenly it bursts into a drone-tastic groove that recalls Clinic’s fusion of The Velvet Underground and Neu!-style kosmische. We’re later treated to a selection of beautiful pop songs that recall Bowie, The Byrds and Joy Division – albeit shrouded in menace, reverb and the achingly dry baritone of frontman Brad Hargett. Pianos are hammered irresistibly on ‘Through The Floor’, and proceedings become darkly danceable on ‘Shake The Shackles’. All the while, Crystal Stilts’ vitality never lets up. Terrific stuff.
