Rush-recorded by a band that had barely heard frontman Alexis Taylor’s demos, this album relies on its players’ musicianship. It’s a good job the bespectacled Hot Chipper gathered some genuinely remarkable talents, then. Spiritualized’s John Coxon, This Heat’s Charles Hayward and piano maverick Pat Thomas combine with Taylor on an eclectic record overflowing with ideas. Fairground keys and noodling guitars slosh around in the slipstream of Taylor’s high-pitched love songs. ‘Don’t Worry’ and ‘You’re No Good’ showcase their collective finesse, yet the over-indulgent jams elsewhere mar an LP that might have been every bit as super as its players.
