As tonight’s Lyle & Scott musical showcase is being filmed for Channel 4, one of the main activities for the evening is scrambling to find a viewing space that isn’t blocked by the media circus permeating the crowd. First up is Bristol band on the up-and-up Goan Dogs, whose frontman helpfully explains their name further as “dogs from Goa”. Sounding a lot like a more upbeat version of latterday Spindrift, the South West boys invoke the spirit of the Spaghetti Western in tracks like ‘Gasoline’ and ‘Hold me Back’, all twangy guitar and rolling, dusty beats. Layer over with truly excellent three part Coral-esque vocals and tight playing and you’ve got a very enjoyable live band. Top notch.

Following on are Reading four- piece Worship. Described by some as “haunting”, their angsty beat-led crescendo fare is more traditional than chilling. and ‘Kid A’ era Radiohead is definitely an influence in songs like ‘Distant Sirens’, but unfortunately live singer Tim Alexander’s vocals sound a little strained over all that keyboard and reverb. More interesting is their final song ‘In Our Blood’, where the pace is slowed and there is a bit more room for all that echo. But they do have 50 thousand more Facebook likes than the other two artists tonight combined, so that’s got to count for something. Right?

Headlining is Cambridge philosophy grad and Kyla La Grange, one of the now common breed of hotly tipped stars who have not yet penned an album. Backed by an extremely TV friendly band (posturing indie boys), the singer/songwriter seems intent on staring resolutely over our heads into the middle distance. La Grange’s sound flits somewhere between Stevie Nicks, Florence and Emily Jane White, with epic ballads like ‘Heavy Stone’ and the more folk tinged ‘Been Better’ and ‘Vampire Smile’. While her voice is excellent, it doesn’t have enough weight behind it to fully carry her songs live, and this leaves the whole package feeling a little hollow. La Grange is talented, but perhaps needs some more gigging experience before her shows are as ambitious as her music.
