Northern Ireland’s Two Door Cinema Club have come a long way since their last performance at this venue when they played to a mere handful of people. Since then they have got themselves a batch of bigger and better tunes and also a drummer; a wise move that now elevates them from an average guitar band to one of the rising stars of the indie-pop scene.
The band appear relaxed and humbled by their reception from the capacity crowd as they storm through a set showcasing material both new and old. ‘Something Good Can Work’ sounds as fresh as ever, yet recent single ‘I Can Talk’ gives the band’s latest addition a chance to demonstrate his skills, and shows a highly developed maturity and growth both in song writing and style. Two Door Cinema Club might not yet be perfect, but with a headlining tour just round the corner and an album in the works, 2010 could be a massive year for this set of teenagers.
However, it’s difficult to fathom the co-headline billing of this tour when tonight Two Door Cinema Club have a simple set of houselights, while Delphic grace the stage with enough bright lights and strobing to cause en masse epilepsy. The band’s unique hybridisation of dance and rock is well received by the packed-out venue, and whilst they may appear somewhat nerdy they are true pioneers of the current music scene and are creating some of the most exciting material out at the moment. Delphic create a chaotic non-stop sound clash of beats and blops as songs such as ‘This Momentary’ are opened up, re-invented and seamlessly mixed to create a non-stop party with crowd favourite ‘Counterpoint’ providing a fantastic and fitting finale.
