It’s a fine line between sticking to your morals and just being pig-headed. An example: I hate umbrellas. Not a passive dislike, an active hatred. And it’s not just that the people who use them demonstrate a total disregard for the safety of others by marching along with a barbed object at eye level, or that the rain that doesn’t land on them conveniently streams off the umbrella and onto the poor, helpless soul standing next to them at the bus stop. No, more than that I think these people, in their little umbrella-sheltered bubbles of don’t-give-a-fuck-about-anyone-else isolation, are a microcosm of everything that’s wrong with society. In fact, in my Daily Mail-style ‘Vote Kinsman For King Of The World’ manifesto (along with capital punishment for queue-jumpers and bus drivers who wait til you’ve run all the way to the bus stop and then drive away anyway) would be a bill to outlaw umbrellas from public places. Or perhaps, to attract the liberal vote, the introduction of umbrella lanes, so that people who consider their hairstyle more important than the eye sight of those around them can endanger each other and leave the rest of us to get wet (or just wear a hat? Wow, what a novel suggestion!) on our own…
Of course, the underlying theme (if indeed there is one) of this rant is that it’s raining outside and, because I refuse to use an umbrella, and left the house this morning in a coat with no hood, I am soaked. Profound, eh?? And just to show that it is about music, my drenching was soundtracked by Vampire Weekend’s eponymous debut album. Thank heavens for small mercies…
