Cajun Dance Party

‘The Colourful Life’

(XL Recordings)

Although this teenage West London quintet have been dividing their time between school and the recording studio while they prepare for their A Levels, there is no sign of anything less than complete dedication on this magical first offering. It’s short and snappy, weighing in at just nine tracks and thirty nine minutes, but packs a firm musical punch due in no small part to the impressive production techniques of Bernard Butler. ‘The Colourful Life’ flits between piano swirl and string-soaked anthems, clattering, scratchy singalongs and swoonsome ballads and while they may not make the most original of sounds, Cajun Dance Party have sown the seeds for a potentially very fruitful career, and we don’t even have to wait long for the next instalment - the second album is out in October.

Really good album, the killer tracks are heads and shoulders above a few of the lesser tracks, but an absolutely solid debut nonetheless. Recommended.
