‘Our Ill Wills’

( Columbia)

Out in the USA and mainland Europe since last year, this month sees the long overdue UK release of ‘Our Ill Wills’, the Swedish band’s second album. A wonderful collection of bittersweet melodies, ‘Our Ill Wills’ sits somewhere between the The Cure and The Radio Dept. and is one of the best albums of 2008 so far. Or should that be 2007? Probably both, in fact. New single ‘Impossible’ is a sad tear that comes from a happy memory – or perhaps vice versa – while ‘Parents Livingroom’ is a trip back to childhood that manages to be nostalgic without being sentimental. ‘Meat Is Murder’ is, luckily, a reference to The Smiths’ song rather than a cover of it – the only thing which would have tainted this album’s wistful glory.
