Following the hysterical post-SXSW chatter about White Denim, you may already be sick of hearing about how good they are. But the Austin-based trio prove how true it is with ‘Workout Holiday’ - a truly remarkable first effort filled to the brim with clattering drums, distorted riffs, demonic basslines, clunking pianos, howled vocals and Gertrude Stein-inspired lyrics. Recorded in sticksman Josh Block’s 1940s Spartan trailer in 2006, the debut is as infectious as it is wilfully lo-fi and cleverly created, drawing on jazz, soul, classic and psych-rock influences and resulting in a sound that in these days of dumbed down, over-produced daytime radio fodder indie is utterly unique.
