The Zutons
‘You Can Do Anything’
(Deltasonic)
Selling shithoops of records often increases the expectation levels way beyond what is morally reasonable and with ‘that’ version of Valerie coming off the back of the massive success of ‘Tired Of Hanging Around’, The Zutons were under some pressure to deliver. There’s less joyous freshness evident than on the previous two albums, but at times they hit some hugely high spots - the spirited delivery of Dave McCabe and band on ‘What’s Your Problem’ is undeniably catchy. Elsewhere, Abi’s singing lifts ‘You Could Make The Four Walls Cry’ into a devilish duet and ‘Give Me A Reason’ shows the esoteric side with some tautness. They can’t do everything, but when they do what they do, they do it damned well.
