‘The Hope’

Sign’s debut album was released in 2001, when Icelandic frontman Zolberg was only fourteen – and seven years on, as is oft the case with Nordic acts by the time they start to breakthrough in England, the band are slick. They may not be as unique a proposition as Finnish neighbours HIM, but what
Iceland’s Sign lack in subtlety they make up for in surround sound. Their choruses are all-encompassing – and although they’re more polished than emo-punk groups like The Used, they’re edgier than Linkin Park, and a knack for heartfelt melodies (check out standout softer tracks ‘Moveless’ and ‘All Gone’) could endear them to fans across the board. Zolberg’s looks won’t do the group any harm either. It’s worth noting too that anyone who finds their interest sparked by ‘The Hope’ should definitely seek out Sign’s catchy last record ‘Thank God For Silence’.
