Album Review: Hatcham Social

Hatcham Social
‘You Dig The Tunnel I’ll Hide The Soil’
(Fierce Panda)

On the streets of Shoreditch, Hatcham Social are the best thing since the bees got knees, but it’s unclear if the wider world will love their debut album as much as a corner of East London surely will. With their dreamy Morrissey lyrics and gentle tapping of xylophones in numbers such as ‘Crocodile’ and the subtle but captivating building of tension in ‘Sidewalk’, with more jaunty and upbeat moments in songs such as ‘Hypnotise Terrible Eyes’ and ‘So So Happy Making’, fans of The Smiths and Joy Division will gobble this right up.  Hatcham Social might slot perfectly into the generation-White Lies but whether they’ve got enough to reach out as far as the Number One trio remains to be seen.
