Album Review: Dan Black

Dan Black
‘((un))’
(A&M)

In a diverse modern pop world dominated by such clever song constructionists as Xenomania and now La Roux and Florence And The Machine, coming up with purely passable offerings just won’t cut it. Dan Black is pretty much screwed. This highly-anticipated debut from the hyped Londoner and ex-The Servant frontman, recorded under his Paris apartment, is a thoroughly dull and uninspiring collection of smooth ballads driven by string samples, beats and winsome melodies. When he ups the tempo on tracks like ‘Alone’, ‘Yours’ and the dreadfully titled ‘Pump My Pumps’, he becomes a little more interesting. But not a whole lot. And then there’s the whiney Cooper Temple Clause-esque vocals to get your head around too - don’t bother.

what? damn, thats sad if music reviews have come to this. symphonies is an epic song. sad how jonas brothers and kings of leon are at the top but dan black, minus the bear, owen, american football, are still at an all time low.. long live good music! gimme more than the life i see. Let go is also, a beautiful song. Re-Listen, dont just hear the music, listen. Then Re-Write your review. Not just what your logical-mainstream brain tells you to. With your god given mind. If you still dont like it, then hey at least you gave it a fair shot. Laters.

I totally agree with Rene there, the its a beautiful album and i think Dan Black is highly talented and have been listening to him for some time. Ever since i very first heard him, with the song 'yours' i knew Dan Black would be a guy to watch out for, and then he came with 'Symphonies' which was also a amazing song. Hearing he had an album coming out truely filled me with excitement and high standards and in my eyes hes met my standards, i dont believe there is one bad song on the album. Admittingly yes there are one or two dull let down tracks, but with a simply amazing track like 'Let Go' thant kinda makes up dor it.
