Album Review: Liars

Liars
‘Sisterworld’
(Mute)

The vicious, mechanical grinding of Liars’ fifth album ‘Sisterworld’ takes all the engaging aspects of their slightly misguided former albums and points them in a new, invigorated direction. Based on the dark and sinister sides of LA, ‘Sisterworld’ takes their commanding and schizophrenic punk to a terrifying new level. Kicking off with first single ‘Scissor’, you’d be mistaken for thinking its all calm sincerity until frontman Angus’ voice detonates from a deathly murmur into a guttural roar. Mournful, nightmarish strings add to the wicked menace of ‘No Barrier Fun’, ‘Proud Evolution’ smacks of Radiohead’s ‘Sit Down Stand Up’, whilst ‘Drip’’s desolate echoes and churning conveyor-belt repetitions prove that Liars have mastered the art of unnerving and affecting compositions. A heavyweight return from a truly riveting act.
