Kyte
‘Dead Waves’
(Kids)

It’s been a good year for Postal Serviceindebted bands. First Owl City stormed his way to the top of the charts with rather more than a nod to Ben Gibbard and co. And now Leicestershire’s Kyte’s second album arrives to rub salt into the wound. Except, mercifully, ‘Dead Waves’ isn’t a straight-up pastiche of ‘Ocean Eyes’, the four-piece approaching the dream-glitch aesthetic from a post-rock viewing point. ‘Like She Said’ swells and throbs with gentle patience, whilst ‘No-one Is Angry, Just Afraid’ shows intricacy under its drifting clouds of sound. ‘Dead Waves’’ failings though come with its constantly lethargic tempo, whilst a lack of album centrepoint results in many tracks drifting off uneventfully into the horizon, leaving the listener behind.
