Be Your Own Pet/Future Of The Left
01/04/08
Future Of The Left are going to eat your soul. They’re going to rip you apart and put you together all wrong, with arms as legs and your head up your backside. They don’t give a fuck what you think or who you are. If they think you’re a cunt they’ll call you a cunt. They don’t care. Because when they’re onstage, all that matters is the noise that the three of them make. If it doesn’t piss you off, you know exactly what kind of a great thing you’re watching. If it does, you probably should have stayed at home. They’re abrasive, confrontational, loud, funny, challenging – and that’s both them and their music – and they, and their jerky, irascible, fuck you songs, confuse and divide a bewildered Scala crowd. For that, they’re even more brilliant.
Be Your Own Pet, by comparison, seem relatively tame. They work the crowd and shake the place about and deliver the goods with energy and a smile and they sound great – no mistake there – but even though they play just 45 minutes, it becomes a little samey. They’re all conquering and they kill the crowd, especially with the encore of Bunk Skunk Trunk, but at the end of the night, there’s no question who the real victors are, whatever the majority of the crowd may think.
