Make Model
15/04/2008
Nice of Glasgow six-piece Make Model to bring the Scottish weather down with them tonight: April's showers have turned apocalyptic, perhaps explaining why Barfly is only half-full. A shame, because when Make Model hit their stride, the art-rockers are mesmerising, at times resembling Arcade Fire if their debut album was called 'Wedding' instead of 'Funeral', at others sounding like a more mainstream, less-ADD Broken Social Scene. And, whilst much has been made of their music’s obvious nod towards Canada’s finest, there's also more mainstream leanings at work here - 'Just Another Folk Song' is armed with a chest-thumping chorus that could be Springsteen, ferchrissakes, whilst 'Czech Neck' sounds monumental, a skyscraping, euphoric mass. Former single 'The Was' sounds like a new-wave waterfall, whilst closer 'The LSB' starts out in an explosion of fuzzed-up, jagged-riffs but soon morphs into a climactic hollerfest.
If there's a bone to pick, it's that sometimes the whole thing sounds a bit too clinical but that's a bit like knocking Man Utd for beating Arsenal a bit too easily. Tonight, Make Model are thrilling, making the prospect of their forthcoming debut very, very exciting indeed.
